Irwin A. Kishner, co-chair of Herrick's Sports Law Group was quoted in an article in USA Today discussing recent legislation allowing student-athletes to pursue endorsement opportunities and monetize their celebrity status. The article addressed new laws related to name, image and likeness ("NIL"), which "will shatter the basic concept that has defined the NCAA model for more than a century: that student-athletes cannot be reimbursed in any form for participating in college sports."  

"This is really a seismic shift in how athletes are going to be compensated and recruited and where they’re going to decide to go," said Kishner. "It really is unique in a certain way."

The article continues to discuss the biggest questions on where NIL issues stand on a statewide, national and NCAA level including which states have legislation going into effect in short order, the commonalities and differences in the various bills, where the NCAA stands with respect to the legislation, how the legislation will impact recruiting and the cost considerations for schools.
