What to say if a job interviewer asks: “Do you want to work from home?”

Carol Goodman, co-chair of Herrick's Litigation Department and chair of the Employment Practice, was featured in CBS MoneyWatch discussing employer interview questions on a candidate's location preferences. She advised that questions that are asked of applicants or current employees must be business-related and be posed only in order to understand and communicate a company's expectations or needs.

"The employer has to focus on the job, position, responsibilities. We can't ask interview questions like, 'Do you have kids, are they in school, will you find a babysitter?' Those are impermissible interview questions," Carol explained. She added, "They want to be careful not to stray into an area where the answer is, 'I do need to work from home two days a week because I have little kids and I want to make sure they have coverage[.]'"
