Irwin Kishner, Herrick's Executive Chairman, was interviewed in Law360  in an article discussing how associates demonstrate their value and engage with firm leadership to make partner in light of issues created by the pandemic. Kishner noted that an associate must first demonstrate they are invaluable to the firm, which can be shown in a number of different ways. He further explained that "[t]his could mean being a go-to lawyer for an important client, being a subject matter expert in an area that the firm is looking to grow, or it could be having deep and far reaching connections that could land the firm new business." The associate must be positively contributing -- adding value more than they are taking out.

"Another key characteristic of future partners is that they take ownership of legal assignments, Kishner added, meaning "that the client knows and can trust that their matter is in good hands if that associate is working on it and it also means that the associate proactively asks the partner in charge on a given matter whether they can be involved and take on the work."

"It's about being present. That doesn't always mean physically, but present within the capillaries of the firm and when volunteers are called for, you step up and move forward," Kishner concluded.
