More PGA players are making the jump to Saudi-backed LIV Golf
Irwin Kishner, co-chair of Herrick's Sports Law Group, was mentioned on the air on Yahoo! Finance in a segment on the sponsorship implications of some top golfers moving to the LIV Golf League. Reporter Josh Schafer referenced how PGA players Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed, among others, have chosen the Saudi-backed LIV Golf League
Schafer cited that Kishner does not believe that sponsors are going to back out and that there is "strength in numbers." Schafer stated that Kishner advised that "what the sponsors need to be careful of more than anything else is angering the PGA TOUR" and that "it's going to be the same thing when it comes to broadcast rights."
Kishner predicted that a broadcasting company will eventually cover the events, but will be mindful of the PGA TOUR, as well. He also noted that the public perception of a Saudi-backed league is not necessarily relevant.
Schafer concluded by endorsing Kishner's opinions by reflecting on a prior conversation with him noting that: "this is the same sports lawyer that I talked to that said that the Chelsea sale and Roman Abramovich owning the team, it wasn't going to matter and public perception wouldn't matter and Chelsea would go for big money and it did. So maybe he'll be right about this one too."
