For Commanders, Monumental’s deal to stay in D.C. could have ripple effects

Irwin Kishner, co-chair of Herrick's Sports Law Group, was quoted in the Washington Post on whether the recent deal to keep the Capitals and Wizards in D.C. would affect the chances that Maryland will win the regional competition for the next Commanders stadium. While the article reports that Maryland's "confidence is growing," it notes that the other team's agreements to stay in the district have not diminished the city's ability to compete and the Commanders "aren't in any rush to pick a site." 

The article cited several deal-experts acknowledging that D.C.’s commitment of $515 million to keep the other teams in the district is money it cannot give to the Commanders. However, these experts did not state that it hurt the city’s ability to attract a new team. Kishner noted that the D.C. mayor has long championed bringing the Commanders back to the city. “There's only a limited amount of dollars, but if there's motivation to do it, they can do it,” Kishner said.
