City Advances Plan to Stop Hotel Development in Industrial Zones
Mitch Korbey was quoted in Crain’s New York Business, discussing the M1 Hotel Text Amendment, a zoning measure that would make it difficult for developers to build hotel projects on industrial zoned land without a permit. Some experts suggested that the measure is part of an effort to rein in hotel construction during peak tourism season, however Korbey argued that construction in these zones would provide tourists with accommodations and local workers with jobs. He said, "Hotels built in manufacturing zones have created many more jobs and sparked much more economic development than they have displaced. The loss of thousands of manufacturing jobs in the city over the years has nothing to do with zoning or hotels."
