Sports Law Leaders Discuss Legal Developments and What They Are Tracking

Irwin Kishner, co-chair of Herrick's Sports Law Group and co-chair of Herrick's Corporate Department, was quoted in Professional Sports and the Law in an article in which sports law leaders were interviewed on current legal developments and trends they are tracking in the industry. Irwin discussed the Sports Law Group's current deal flow, including the representation of private funds in their investments in the sports sector. He notes that, "[t]hese investments vary across leagues and teams from sailing to a variety of basketball competitions, media and entertainment platforms and women’s soccer." He also highlighted the growth in Herrick's representation of emerging leagues branching off traditional professional sports and the related work that involves everything from league formation to player retention agreements.

Irwin noted that the trends that he is seeing in the sports business world including the "fervent interest by private equity funds in investing in the sports industry," the growth of mixed-use developments, the explosion in viewership of live sporting events, the growth of women's sports and emerging teams and leagues and the legalization of gambling and the proliferation of predictions markets, which have driven value into the industry.
