The 5 Things You Need To Become A Top Lawyer In Your Specific Field of Law
Herrick litigation partner Scott E. Mollen was interviewed by Authority Magazine in an article where he shares insights learned throughout his fascinating and distinguished career. He offers advice to new and aspiring attorneys, including the top five qualities he believes are important to becoming a successful lawyer: expertise, judgement, communication, listening, and empathy.
As it relates to empathy, Scott says, "As a lawyer, it is vitally important that you put yourself in the shoes of your client and offer them the best advice for the path forward. Being able to truly understand the client’s problems and how such problems can be addressed is critical to success."
He adds, "I remember one situation where the single solution would seem to be a public apology. But since the client wanted to be elected to a particular position, a public apology was unacceptable to the client. The client believed that he has acted properly and was willing to apologize privately as long as the other party also apologized. An acceptable solution could not be crafted without understanding the client’s future plans."
