What was it about Herrick that enticed you to join the firm?

The culture. Early on in law school I knew I wanted to go into private practice. However, I was concerned about not finding the right fit and was very careful in selecting a firm where I knew I could grow professionally and build a career. I did my due diligence before joining Herrick and thought Herrick met my criteria. From my first visit to its office in midtown, I knew it was going to be a second home. Even after twelve years, my view of Herrick has not changed. The doors are always open. We see smiling faces while walking through the hallways. Associates are encouraged to ask questions, to challenge the status quo, to find and create solutions and to succeed by thinking outside of the box. Now I am proud to include Herrick as a part of my life story - that I was born to Chinese parents in Venezuela, that I immigrated to the United States without speaking the language, that I was fortunate enough to attend a great college with a full scholarship and that today I serve as a partner at a prestigious law firm.

What surprised you most when you joined Herrick?

I was surprised at how welcoming everyone was and how easy it was to make new friends. Having a background in finance and having interned at major banking institutions, it was refreshing to see how different Herrick was from the typical corporate setting. At Herrick, everyone knows everyone, from the mailroom staff to the practice assistants to the partners. Everyone is friendly and encouraging. As an associate, many partners mentored me, even when not solicited. As a junior attorney, I did not know what I did not know, but senior attorneys were always around to enthusiastically guide me. It was also very surprising how easy it was to befriend my peers, some of whom have moved on to different settings, but remain my closest friends today. Herrick is very deliberate in hiring attorneys that are talented and also share its ideals and philosophies. Herrick prides itself in the belief that we are stronger together and that close and respectful relationships provide the support needed to grow professionally.

How is Herrick supporting you in your professional growth and development?

Herrick is truly an amazing place. There is always space for improvement and always new developments in the law. We, at Herrick, work as a team and we make each other better. We consult with our colleagues across practice areas when we need confirmation or when the question is outside the area in which we practice. The full suite of services that Herrick provides has given me the confidence and tools to meet my clients’ needs and exceed their expectations. Herrick has given me the resources to practice law successfully and to continue to grow professionally.

What would you want people to know about Herrick and the people that make up the team?

Herrick values hard work, creativity and proactiveness, but Herrick also values life outside of work. At Herrick, we are ourselves, just human beings who have a family and friends. At Herrick, our clients are not just clients, but they often become our friends. We share their concerns and we understand their business goals and needs. After collaborating under pressing circumstances, whether it be negotiating a major deal or structuring a business divorce, it is natural to develop a friendship and continue the relationship even after a transaction closes. I believe that a good work environment helps a person grow professionally and personally.
