Herrick, Feinstein LLP Announces New Partners
Herrick, Feinstein LLP is pleased to announce the elevation of Christopher Carty, Leah Kelman, Jared Newman, Brendan Schmitt, and Steven Smith to partner. Their promotions will become effective January 1, 2020.

Christopher Carty, a partner in the Finance Litigation & Restructuring Department, focuses his practice on complex financial litigation, with a concentration in corporate financial restructuring litigation. His practice frequently involves complex litigation, involving valuation disputes, litigation related to capital markets, lender/creditor litigation, capital structure disputes, M&A litigation, disputes among LLC members, exchange offer litigation, and fraudulent transfer litigation.
Leah Kelman, a partner in the Litigation Department, concentrates her practice on complex commercial litigation, including class action defense, title insurance, and professional responsibility, ethics and risk management. Leah also advises the firm on a range of matters including ethics compliance, litigation, risk management and insurance issues. Leah is a member of the firm’s Risk Management Committee and serves on the firm’s Electronic Discovery Committee.
Jared Newman, a partner in the Litigation Department, focuses his practice on complex commercial litigation, with a specific concentration in real estate and construction litigation. Jared has substantial experience representing owners, developers, contractors, and hospitality clients in a broad range of matters, including disputes concerning commercial leases, construction management agreements, condominium development, mechanic’s liens, purchase and sale agreements, and license and access agreements.
Brendan Schmitt, a partner in the Real Estate Department, practices in all facets of real estate law with a focus on real estate development and construction law, representing owners, developers and lenders in contract drafting, negotiation and review, general counseling and development advisory services. Brendan works with property owners and developers through all phases of the building process, beginning prior to acquisition through project completion, advising clients on a diverse range of matters, including construction contracts, risk management and neighboring property construction license agreements.
Steven Smith, a partner in the Finance Litigation & Restructuring Department, focuses his practice on complex corporate restructuring, liquidations and bankruptcy litigation, including in-court Chapter 11 and Chapter 15 cases and out-of-court workouts. He has extensive experience representing distressed debt investors, bondholders, official and ad-hoc creditor committees, administrative and collateral agents, indenture trustees, stalking horse and other asset purchasers, trade and tort claimants and other significant parties-in-interest in a variety of jurisdictions across the United States.
