A Reception for U.S. Congresswoman Liz Holtzman

September 9, 2025
City Hall

Herrick counsel and co-chair of its Government Relations Group, the Hon. Elizabeth Holtzman, was honored by the New York City Council for her decades of public service. Throughout Hon. Holtzman's distinguished career, she broke barriers, championed accountability and fought tirelessly for justice, women's rights and government transparency.

Hon. Holtzman launched her first campaign for public office in 1972, running for the U.S. House of Representatives in New York's 16th Congressional District and defeated a 25-term incumbent to become the youngest woman ever elected to Congress at the time. During her four terms in the House, Hon. Holtzman chaired the Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugees and International law, was the first Democratic woman appointed to the Budget Committee, co-founded the Congresswomen's Caucus and was named to the National Commission on the Observance of International Women's Year by Speaker Tip O'Neill.

After leaving Congress, Holtzman was elected Brooklyn District Attorney in 1981, becoming the first woman to hold the position in New York City. In 1989, Holtzman was elected New York City Comptroller.

  • Brad Lander, New York City Comptroller
  • Carolyn Maloney, Former United States Congress Member, District 12
