Dan Etna was quoted in SB Nation in an article reflecting on the history of sports betting in the U.S., particularly bookmaking which was outlawed in the U.S. in the early 1900s and nearly brought an end to horse racing. Etna said, "you start out with a general premise that in most states, gambling of any type was, by legislative pronouncement, deemed to be illegal" and "deeply embedded in the states’ DNA ... It wasn't just the law." He further noted how New York State had outlawed gambling of any type.
