Q&A: Herrick Feinstein Chair On Mamdani’s Planning Leaders

The chair of Herrick's Land Use & Zoning Practice, Mitch Korbey, was interviewed by Law360 about Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s recent appointments to lead the city’s planning department.

In the interview, Mitch noted that the mayor's new appointees stand to benefit from an existing team already committed to advancing affordability and neighborhood development through zoning reforms initiated under the previous administration.

Mitch explained that "the mayor is being very thoughtful by maintaining the strength of current staff and bringing on new people that will work to achieve the objectives and policies that the mayor has in mind. The overriding focus is affordability, affordable housing, equity and developments that are good for the city's neighborhoods."

"There's an emphasis on finding ways to work with the development community to make sure projects are inclusive and that they provide the maximum opportunities for new affordable housing," Mitch said.
