Herrick partner, Brendan Schmitt was profiled by Law.com in their series, "How I Made Partner."

In the profile, Brendan describes his relationship with Herrick and the Real Estate group, the way he develops business and deepens client relationships, his mentorship and working relationship with William R. Fried, partner and co-chair of Herrick's Litigation practice, as well as other pieces of advice for young associates.

In describing his business development strategy, Brendan tells Law.com, "I have been most successful in developing business through delivering good results and getting noticed—often by counterparties—in the process."

Brendan says the tipping point for his practice in the past few years has been working with William Fried. "My transactional real estate construction and development practice often crosses into litigation or something nearing it, and having the luxury of Bill’s aptitude in the litigation side of my practice area really allowed me to carve out a niche on the transactional, almost-litigation side of the business."

Brendan advises that young associates looking to make partner should be well-rounded in their approach and strategy, "work hard, solidify existing client relationships, be responsive, get to know your colleagues, be the type of person you would want to work with, act on opportunities, be looking for new clients, take ownership of matters; but do those things while still being yourself."
