The CISG: 35 Years After the Treaty’s Adoption: What Lawyers Need to Know
February 28, 2023 – New York Law JournalHerrick partner, Kyle Kolb, authored an article for the New York Law Journal discussing the importance of the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods ("the CISG") for attorneys involved with cross-border transactions or disputes.
The article notes the CISG, also known as the Vienna Convention, applies as default to any parties participating in business between any of the 94 countries that have adopted it. Although the CISG was ratified in 1980 by the United Nations, in addition to covering approximately two-thirds of international trade contracts today, many believe that the CISG is not widely understood in the United States. This article highlights the importance of understanding when the CISG applies and why it matters.
