‘You have to have major investment’: Why CT’s only major league sports team could be leaving
Irwin Kishner, co-chair of Herrick's Sports Law Group and co-chair of Herrick's Corporate Department, spoke with CT Insider on the possible sale of the WNBA Connecticut Sun. The article notes that "Mohegan leadership said the tribe was 'very proud' of the Sun and is 'committed to the team’s success,'" but is "consistently evaluating strategic options, investments, and capital expenditures," which includes a possible sale.
According to the article, the Sun is one of the WNBA's most successful franchises and has produced some of the league's best players. However, the team lacks important player development resources and its location "continues to alienate the team's top players in free agency."
Irwin said "it makes sense the Sun might look to sell, given the WNBA’s surging popularity."
"It doesn't surprise me that any owner that's had the club for a while is exploring opportunities to convert that value into cash," said Irwin . . . "[b]ecause I think now would be a time to do it."
The article further notes that if the Mohegan Tribe chooses to sell the franchise, there's no indication of where the Sun's might end up, but it's expected that they will leave Connecticut.
