The Litigation Department conducts innovative training programs in all aspects of our practice, including client intake, electronic discovery, deposition and trial skills, settlement and alternative dispute resolution, and legal writing. In addition, through an initiative called Legal Outreach, our associates have the opportunity to work with a group of high school students that Herrick hosted for a week, to help them prepare for a moot court style oral argument that they presented on the final day of their program. These training programs are run in conjunction with an active mentoring program in which each associate is assigned a partner mentor who meets with the associate throughout the year to discuss the associate's progress and development.
The Corporate Department conducts an annual training program consisting of two one-hour sessions per month. Partners or other experienced attorneys present in a format that encourages interactive group discussion. Most of the classes address corporate practice issues, but we also cover other relevant topics, including legal ethics. We occasionally invite outside professionals, such as investment bankers and accountants, to present on industry-specific topics. These sessions are mandatory for all of our corporate attorneys, but real estate and litigation attorneys are welcome to attend and often do.
The Real Estate Department conducts regular training programs in financing, acquisitions and sales, zoning, leasing, construction, and other legal and business aspects of the real estate industry. Our classes focus on the practical side of lawyering—how we help our clients protect themselves and meet their business goals. We often invite outside professionals, including architects, engineers, insurance consultants, title companies, 1031 specialty firms, and other real estate industry participants to lecture for us and further enhance our lawyers' understanding of their particular industries, and the varying positions of the players.
