Potential Changes to Zoning Regulations for Hotel Uses

May 2009

Herrick's Land Use Team has learned that the City is contemplating changes to zoning regulations for hotel uses. Presently, hotels are allowed as of right in most of New York's commercial and manufacturing-zoned areas.  City agencies are now considering rule changes that would require that hotels receive special approvals before locating in certain manufacturing districts in Manhattan. Affected areas will likely include the Garment Center and portions of Clinton, but could also involve Chelsea and the Meatpacking District. The Land Use Team is closely monitoring the City's efforts.  If adopted, the rule change would create a lengthy public review process and require Planning Commission approvals for hotels in these areas.
