ULI New York: Young Leaders Group Roundtable – NYC Zoning

November 13, 2013

Mitch Korbey participated on a panel discussion at the ULI New York Young Leaders Group Round Table on NYC Zoning. The panel covered:

Where is NYC zoning regulations now? What has occurred recently and what vestigial rules remain that should be reconsidered in looking at the future? After recently celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the 1961 Zoning Resolution, some questions still remain as to the relevance of certain zoning mandates. Under the Bloomberg Administration, 20% of the City was rezoned with neighborhoods including West Chelsea, Williamsburg, Hunter's Point South and Hudson Yards. What impact does that have and what does it mean? How much manufacturing zoning does the City need and is it appropriately located now for areas including the Garment District and Sheepshead Bay? No hospital has zoning that is appropriate, how can we address that?

Each panelist discussed his view from varied perspectives, providing relevant examples to better understand the overall history, policy, and what leads to changes in NYC zoning regulation.
