Paul Shapses is a partner in Herrick's Real Estate Department,

Paul focuses his practice on sophisticated commercial real estate finance, including interim, permanent, mezzanine and construction lending; dispositions and financings of portfolios of properties and distressed and performing mortgage loans; forward loan commitments, and co-lending agreements and loan participations.

Paul is also actively involved in commercial acquisitions, dispositions, development (including construction and design agreements with contractors and architects) and commercial leasing transactions.

Paul has been instrumental in the financing, acquisition and workout of more than $12 billion of resort and hotel properties in every state in the United States, Canada, the Bahamas, Anguilla, Bermuda, the Dominican Republic, Turks & Caicos, St. Martin, and Mexico. He has handled sophisticated hotel and resort matters since 1988, and in 1993 worked to establish the first securitized lending program originated by a major Wall Street investment bank devoted to the hospitality industry.

Paul is co-chair of the Travel and Leisure Practice Group of TAGLaw, a group of prominent regional law firms around the world. He also helps hotel owners negotiate operating agreements, technical services agreements and related documentation with the most prominent hotel brands in the world.

Paul has lectured on due diligence issues related to loan origination and securitization at the National Law Conference of the International Council of Shopping Centers.
