City Council Land Use Division General Counsel Anne McCaughey Joins Herrick’s Real Estate Department

September 9, 2015 – Press Release

New York, August 9, 2015 – Herrick, Feinstein LLP, a leader in commercial real estate law since 1928, is pleased to announce that Anne McCaughey, who previously served as General Counsel to the New York City Council’s Land Use Division, has joined Herrick’s real estate department.

In her role as general counsel, Anne advised City Council Members on all land use matters and development projects, and served as the primary interface with external stakeholders. Anne also represented the City Council in interactions with the offices of Mayors Michael Bloomberg and Bill de Blasio, the Corporation Counsel and other city, state and federal entities and officials regarding significant rezonings and development projects.

Her counsel and advocacy contributed to the approval of millions of square-feet of residential, commercial and mixed-use development in all five boroughs, including the redevelopment of Hudson Square in Manhattan, Domino Sugar in Brooklyn, Astoria Cove in Queens, the St. George Waterfront Project in Staten Island, as well as major expansions by New York University and Cornell University.

“We are delighted to welcome Anne to our growing team,” said Belinda Schwartz, chair of Herrick’s Real Estate Department. “Anne brings our real estate clients a unique and very valuable set of skills, including an exceptional understanding of the city’s land use and zoning laws, and an insider’s perspective on navigating the political process associated with major development projects.”

Anne is the seventh new addition this year to Herrick’s Real Estate Department, which is one of the largest in the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area. These key additions bolstered Herrick’s capabilities in numerous areas, including real estate development, acquisition, commercial leasing, finance, affordable housing, government relations, and land use and zoning.

Members of our group have previously served as elected and appointed officials with the New York City Board of Standards and Appeals, the New York City Council, the Department of City Planning, and the Landmarks Preservation Commission.

This public sector experience helps us aid clients in their interactions with key government agencies and officials, provide political advocacy, assist with navigating thorny matters through government approvals, and represent clients in large-scale development projects that fall under the New York City Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP). Enhancing our capabilities is our group of non-attorney urban planners, which includes former members of the Department of City Planning and the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
