Legal and Ethical Issues in Philanthropic Naming Rights
Herrick's Art Law Group and The Art Newspaper hosted the first art law event of the 2019 Art Business Forum panel series. The panel addressed the issues to be considered by donors in discussions with institutions and the challenges institutions face in allocating and maintaining naming rights, particularly when donors become embroiled in scandal or are found to be involved in questionable activities. The panel also explored recent high-profile cases that magnified the issues that arise in philanthropic naming rights and addressed the complex legal challenges and ethical maneuvering that often results.
Margaret Carrigan, The Art Newspaper's Deputy Art Market Editor moderated the panel which included Barbara Lawrence, Herrick’s Trusts & Estates Chair; and Sally Yerkovich, Chair of the Ethics Committee at the International Council of Museums. Opening remarks were given by Herrick's Frank Lord.
